Hope - Day 2 - Faith-Based Advent Activity

How To Make a Scripture Tag

1.     Supplies:

a.     Cardstock, Construction Paper, or Copy Paper

b.     fine tip black marker

c.      additional colored markers, colored pencils or crayons

d.     Ribbon, scraps of paper, cloth, lace

2.     Use whatever kind of paper you have handy – construction, cardstock or even regular copier paper.

3.     Decide what size you want to make your scripture tag.  It can be like a tag for a present with a decorative edge.  It can be the size of a bookmark.

4.     Cut your paper to the size that you want to make your scripture tag.  Cut the edges if desired.  If you have a Cricut machine, use it to cut your tag.  You’ll find free images of tags in Design Space.  You may also want to punch a hole in the top of your tag and decorate it with ribbon.

5.     Next, read Jeremiah 29:11 and pray about it.  How does it speak to you about hope?  Decide how you are going to decorate your tag using this verse.

a.     Write or paraphrase the verse onto your tag – remember that you have both the front & back of the tag.

b.     Doodle or decorate your tag with doodle drawings, ephemera (ribbons, material, pieces of paper, etc.).

c.      Make sure that you reference the bible verse somewhere on your tag.

d.     Place your completed tag in your bible on the Jeremiah 29 page.

Hope - Day 1 Faith-Based Advent Activity

 Make a Hope Ornament

I decided to go ahead & put the directions and inspiration information for today's activity along with pictures to help you create a simple ornament made from cardstock or construction paper.  Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • Google Hope ornament to get some inspiration.
  • If you have a Cricut machine, consider using vinyl to cut a design to put on a wooden or acrylic ornament.  Remember that you can also use HTV vinyl for cardstock.
  • If you don’t have a cutting machine, again use construction paper, cardstock or copier paper.  Use household items that are round as a pattern for a circle.
  • Some other ideas of medium to use:
    •  Clothespins
    •  Wood – at Dollar Tree you can find cheap wooden plaques and shapes.  Also consider using Scrabble tiles.  Use the H-O-P-E tiles, glue them together (use a craft stick as the backing) and add a ribbon and other decorations if you want to make a beautiful ornament
    •  Beads – pony beads, wooden beads

Here are the directions for a simple ornament:

Supplies:  red, green, or gold construction paper or cardstock; a large round circle stencil – like a wide mouth mason jar ring; white construction paper or cardstock; additional scraps of construction paper or cardstock for additional decoration; glue; ribbon for hanging ornament; hole punch; black fine tip marker

Step 1:  Use the large circle stencil to draw a circle onto the construction paper/cardstock of your choice.  Draw a second circle if you want to reinforce the ornament.

Step 2:  Punch a hole in the top of the circle.  (If you choose to reinforce the circle, punch a hole in that circle also.)

Step 3:  Cut a rectangle of white paper/cardstock approximately ½” wide (depending on how big your circle is) and as long as the diameter (width) of your circle.  Glue the rectangle in the middle of the circle.  Trim the excess paper.

***What I learned:  I originally said to use a 1 1/2" rectangle.  That was way to big for the circle that I cut.  So make sure that you size your banner in proportion to the size of your circle.

Step 4:  Write the word HOPE on the white rectangle.

Step 5:  Use additional scraps of paper/cardstock to add additional stripes or zigzag patterns to decorate the ornament.  In the final project picture, you'll notice that I put 2 hearts on the white cardstock where I wrote the word "HOPE."  I have a hole punch that I used.  You could always use a red marker to draw a couple of hearts.  Also if you don't have extra cardstock or patterned paper, you could draw on stripes, circles and zigzags with colored markers, pencils or crayons.

Step 6:  If using a 2nd circle for reinforcement, glue it on the back of the decorated circle.  Make sure the hole punches line up.

Step 7:  Add a ribbon for hanging.
